tiber island and trastevere district
Deeper Rome
Itinerary to discover one of the most Roman districts of the city. The tour starts from the visit of the legendary boat-shaped island connected by the Roman bridges Cestio and Fabrizio dating back to the first century BC.
The island has the shape of a ship and is formed by a large layer of sedimented tuff of sand. Its position in the middle of the river offered a ford between the two banks and an ideal trade point between the Etruscan and Latin population, at the dawn of Roman civilization.
It offers an unusual view of the city, on the one hand the Jewish ghetto with the synagogue, on the other the district of Trastevere characterized by the famous squares and lively alleys and its famous basilicas including Santa Maria in Trastevere and Santa Cecilia. The tour continue with the visit of the main picturesque places of Trastevere, which in Latin wanted to indicate "across the river" Tiber (on the opposite bank to that of the birth of Rome).
