st. clement and st. peter's in chaines basilicas
Deeper Rome
An exciting walk that allows us to visit two extraordinary churches in the area of the Coliseum.
The visit begins with the rich and decorated basilica of San Clemente, rebuilt in the twelfth century. The complex is very important because it is located above ancient buildings buried at three levels of depth and allows you to make a real journey into time from the first century before the medieval era.
These overlaps are particularly evident for the position (in the valley between the Esquiline and Celio hills) and for some important historical events, including the fire of Nero.
We continue with a visit to the Basilica of San Pietro in Chains which houses the famous statue of Moses sculpted by Michelangelo, for the tormented tomb of Pope Julius II, which the artist calls "the tragedy of his life". Another attraction of the church is the chains of the imprisonment of St. Peter, the first pope persecuted by Emperor Nero after the fire of 64 AD, which make it a unique monument in the history of art of Rome and Christianity.
