capitolini museum
Special Tours
The museums were born in 1471 thanks to the donation of Pope Sixtus IV of some ancient bronzes, including the famous Lupa Capitolina, symbol of Rome. Over the centuries beautiful works were added, housed in a beautifully frescoed palace.
The collection ranges from antiquity to baroque, including the portrait of Junio Brutus, the legendary hero of the Roman Republic, the statue of Marcus Aurelius, the only equestrian statue preserved in Rome, the bust of Commodus with the attributes of Hercules, the Marsyas and the Esquiline Venus. The museums also include the imposing remains of the Temple of Capitoline Jupiter, one of the most important in the ancient city.
The Braccio Nuovo preserves the collection of the busts of the Roman emperors and the beautiful and sensual Capitoline Venus, the proud dying Galata, the red Faun and the group of Love and Psyche.
