Hadrian’s Villa in Tivoli, just 20 km from Rome, really testifies the greatness of the Roman Empire. It is one of the best preserved and most visited archaeological sites in Italy and for this reason it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.

The villa was built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian at the foot of the Tiburtini mountains between 118 and 138 A.D. The vast residential complex covered an area of about 120 hectares, it looked like a real ancient Roman city.

Some parts were explicitly commissioned by Hadrian to represent the many provinces of the empire he had visited, including Egypt and Greece.

The site included many buildings, baths, temples, barracks, theatres, gardens, nymphs, fountains and more than five hundred statues.

A very unique site in the era of the Roman Empire, not to be missed.
